*** THE EVOLUTION OF THE ★** AMERICAN BAR HOW THE PUBLIC HOUSE INFLUENCED AMERICA Throughout the history of the United States, the local drinking place served as a community center, where ideas, movements, and cultures could prosper and resonate in countless conversations amongst patrons. Whether it was called a bar, a saloon, or a tavern, many of these establishments were birthplaces of revolution and change in America. THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION GREEN DRAGON THE GREEN DRAGON TAVERN Boston, MA - 1764-1788 The Boston Tea Party Little progress was made after months of protesting England's excessive Tea Tax. A group of demonstrators known as the Sons of Liberty planned the Boston Tea Party, in which they dumped a massive shipment of tea into the ocean, at the 1773, was one of the primary events that led to the American Revolution. reen Dragon Tavern. This event, on December 16th, TAVERN Paul Revere's Midnight Ride Paul Revere left from this very tavern when he rode down the streets of Boston, warning all throughout Middlesex County that, "the Redcoats are coming!" 1773 1776 THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE US MARINE CORPS THE TUN TAVERN Philadelphia, PA - November 10, 1775 On that crisp day in November, the Continental Congress appointed Samuel Nicholas to gather two battalions of Marines to fight in the Revolutionary War. With Robert Mullen as his Chief Marine Recruiter, he set up shop in Tun Tavern, the most iconic brew house in all of Philadelphia. This proved a successful headquarters for recruitment, because what attracts young and able men more than an ice-cold beer? Tun TAVERN THE HOME OF THE AMERICAN LABOR MOVEMENT VARIOUS BARS Across the United States Late 1800s to Early 1900s Underpaid and Overworked During this era, American blue-collar workers were being exploited by the Robber Barons of capitalism. They had unsafe working conditions and no job benefits whatsoever. Organize and Unionize! After 12-hour workdays, 6 or 7 days a week, workers would meet in saloons and taverns. Conversation led to legitimate meetings regarding labor unions. The Reason for Prohibition? Many historians speculate that industrialists like Rockefeller and Ford supported Prohibition because it closed bars, which were the meeting places for union members and sympathizers. SPEAKEASIES AND THE LIBERATION OF WOMEN OTO VARIOUS SPEAKEASIES Across the United States 1920s - 1930s Alcohol Prohibited, Women Allowed Prior to the Prohibition, women were not allowed to be customers at bars. Unless they worked there as servers or cooks, they were out of sight. The bar was a man's place. During the Prohibition, speakeasies were illegal bars where wealthy patrons drank smuggled liquor. In these places, women were not only allowed, they were smiled upon, and livened up the place. As one of the first public places to give women footing, these underground bars were an early foundation to the Women's Rights Movements. STONEWALL RIOTS AND THE BEGINNING OF THE GAY LIBERATION MOVEMENT THE STONEWALL INN Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York City, New York June 28, 1969 A Place to Belong After opening on March 18th, 1967, the Stonewall Inn grew to become the largest gay establishment in the United States. Frequent Raids Due to its popularity, it suffered from frequent police raids. In the late 60s, homosexuality was classified as a mental disorder and practicing it was still illegal in every state but Illinois. A Night of Reckoning After a raid on the morning of June 28th, gay New Yorkers gathered on the street outside the Stonewall Inn and put on protests and demonstrations for the next 6 days. These protests are iconic, and now considered a significant early turning point in the Gay Rights Movement. INN wwww STUDIO 54 AND THE CENTER OF POPULAR CULTURE STUDIO 54 Midtown, Manhattan, Now York City, New York February 4, 1980 Countless Celebrities The famous disco club was the most popular bar in the most significant city in the world. Celebrities from Andy Warhol to Truman Capote to Diana Ross frequented the club, shooting its popularity through the stratosphere. Only the Mafia Made More Money One of the owners of the club said this to the press, and soon after the club was shut down, and the owners were sent to prison for tax evasion. But for 3 glorious years, Studio 54 was the place to be seen in the Big Apple. *****★★★* THE AGE OF THE HAND-CRAFTED COCKTAIL Death + Company, Angel's Share, The Varnish, The Walker Inn 2010s- Present Increasing Community Bars that focus on curated cocktail menus and personalization are cultivating a culture that focuses on conversation and community. These aspects of the public house, which laid the foundation of the institution, had fallen by the wayside in the latter half of the 20th century. Quality Over Quantity These cocktails tend to use liquors and spirits from small and / or independent companies, encouraging patrons to explore more than the big names like Jack Daniels. The Public House has had various shapes, sizes, and purposes throughout the storied history of this great country. It has been the birthplace of progress on countless occasions, and been the center of culture on countless more. Into our technological future, it will remain the center of our community, a place where people gather to share each other's company, and to embrace each other's ideas.
