#EP2014 UNDERSTANDING THE NEW EUROPEAN HOUSE OF CARDS In the biggest exercise in democracy outside India, up to 400 million eligible voters were called to elect their 751 Members of the European FP Parliament yesterday. What are the implications of yesterday's results? ELECTIONS 131 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT #EP2014 AND THE WINNER IS.. The EPP (centre-right) came first in the elections, with 28.23%, followed by the PES (centre-left) with 24.80%. Far-right Eurosceptic parties appear to have made big gains in several large Member States, in what many call a political earthquake. AA THE ENEMY OF MY FRIEND IS THE FRIEND OF MY OTHER ENEMY... No party in the European Parliament has a majority and the ability to engineer partnerships, and coalitions will be crucial for the actual balance of power in the new European Parliament. ONLY A SMALL UPTURN IN TURNOUT.. Since 1979, European elections have witnessed a trend of declining turnout. This year, for the first time, that decline stopped. 131 PENDING QUESTIONS ABOUT #EP2014 INFLUENCE OF EUROSCEPTIC PARTIES? Eurosceptic parties gained a much larger number of seats than in the previous Parliament, but this may not equate to influence over the decision-making process. NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE COMMISSION? The lack of clear majority and the relatively weak turnout will make the bargaining between Parliament and Council difficult and highly politicized. WHAT DOES THIS ALL MEAN FOR BUSINESS? From a free-trade deal with the US to the energy supply across the continent or the governance of the single European currency, Brussels policy-making process will become far more political than before and will put definite limits on traditional technical approaches to lobbying.
