Energy Outlook for Asia and the Pacific 2010-2035: Meeting Asia's Power Demand

ENERGY OUTLOOK FOR ASIA AND THE PACIFIC 2010-2035: MEETING ASIA'S POWER DEMAND With Asia and the Pacific's energy demand set to sharply outpace the rest of the world's over the next two decades, cross-border power exchanges can play a central role in helping the region meet this growing demand. PROJECTED ENERGY DEMAND GROWTH RATE (YEARLY THROUGH TO 2035) REGION'S ELECTRICITY DEMAND TO MORE THAN DOUBLE THE PRC* AND INDIA WILL ACCOUNT FOR OF TOTAL ELECTRICITY 70% GENERATED BY 2035 2.1% 1.5% ASIA-PACIFIC WORLD *PRC = People's Republic of China IFOSSIL FUELS WILL CONTINUE TO DOMINATE THE ENERGY MIX NEW AND RENEWABLE ENERGY 8,000 NUCLEAR 6.000 HYDRO increase in demand 4% per year through to 2035 A NATURAL - GAS • Fastest growth pace of all the fossil fuels • Lower environmental burden & ease of use 4,000 increase in demand 60% by 2035 A OIL 2,000 530% increase in demand by 2035 A COAL 1990 2010 2035 Mtoe = Million tonnes of oil equivalent While energy demand in the industry sector is projected to increase slightly, the growth will be relatively fast in the other sectors (including residential, commercial, agriculture, & fishery) and in the transport sector, mainly because of income growth & the subsequent need for convenience and mobility. CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS OUTLOOK 22,112.6 million tons 5,400.9 Mtoe 13,404 million tons 3,238.5 Mtoe 1990 2000 2010 2020 2035 1990 2000 2010 2020 2035 I Pacific I Southeast Asia I Developed Group I Industry I Transport I Other I Non-energy I Central & West Asia I East Asia I South Asia IADDRESSING THE POWER DEMAND The reliance on fossil fuels presents major pricing, energy security, and environmental challenges. Using a mix of efficiency measures, advanced generation technologies, and greater use of renewable power could almost halve the projected annual rise in energy demand through to 2035. ALTERNATIVE APPROACH (scaling up efficiencies & low carbon technologies) BUSINESS AS USUAL Growth Rate of Energy Demand 2.1% per year 1.4% per year Reduction Of Fossil Fuels Share 83% 74% Cummulative Energy Investments $11.7 trillion $19.9 trillion SOURCE ADB Asian Development Bank • Asian Development Bank (2013).
