Each little dot represents 100 Obama votes or 100 Romney votes. This method avoids the problem of huge swaths of few people overwhelming the visual weight of the map. In this way you get a more precise look at the the volume, distribution, and relative party proportion. The structure of our society assembles itself via millions of dots for a not-so-chunky view of American counties and the way it all went down.
