The Education Revolution

Education Revolution THE The world of online education has quickly become a rapidly growing alternitive to the more traditional forms of higher education. With easy access to programs such as MITX, Coursera, and the Khan Academy, attending university has not only become easier and more efficient for the average post-secondary school graduate, but also significantly cheaper. So, what is this education revolution? Where is it going and when did it start? The Online Education Boom From the internet's beginnings in 1994 there have been online educational programs for various reasons and purposes. From corporate classes to long-distance higher education the rate of growth for online learning has been exponential, and the higher education enrollment numbers for the United States have proven as much. 1995 Online Enrollment: Total Enrollment: 750,000 | 5.6% 14.3 million 2000 Online Enrollment: Total Enrollment: 2.9 million | 18.9% 15.3 million 2005 Online Enrollment: Total Enrollment: 3.2 million | 18.3% 17.5 million 2009 Online Enrollment: Total Enrollment: 5.6 million | 27.5% 20.4 million Technology in Education With the ever increasing popularity of sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, more and more educational institutions are finding ways to use the social media invasion to their benefit. University professors from England to Texas are finding ways to involve Twitter and YouTube in the learning process, rather than banning the usage from the classroom. Twitter In a case study conducted at the University of Bristol, Dr. Sabah Abdullah utilized Twitter as a broadcast medium for students in an undergraduate economics course. At the start of the class students were given a recommended reading list for the course. Throughout the term Dr. Abdullah would post helpful URLS on Twitter to supplement the original reading list. By communicating to her students through Twitter, Dr. Abdullah was able to illustrate Twitter's potential as a means of broadcasting information to students quickly and conveniently. YouTube With its video-based learning program, the Khan Academy offers thousands of free online courses, which can be found solely on You Tube. The Khan Academy provides lessons for ages K-12 on hundreds of topics from algebra and organic chemistry to venture capitalism. Coursera Coursera You Tube The first of its kind - a free online Ivy League education. With volunteer professors from schools such as Stanford, University of California Berkeley, Princeton, University of Michigan, and University of Pennsylvania Coursera offers classes in a wide range of topics from social sciences to computer sciences and iTunes U humanities to medicine. Coursera gives its students the ability to learn at their own pace with full course material, complete with homework assignments, Since its launch in 2007 iTunes U has served higher education institutions as a resource for online educational content. With over 1,000 schools participating, iTunes U has over 500,000 pieces of audio and visual content and has become the largest catalog of online educational content. In an attempt to recruit more Universities, Apple has recently reinvented iTunes U - transforming it into an app, and adding "full online courses," with the ability to view all course materials and assignments in one place. exams, and grades.
