Large shallow earthquakes are typically followed by a significant increase in seismic activity near the mainshock rupture that is generally termed “aftershock.” The Tohoku-Oki earthquake triggered numerous aftershocks that were recorded on scale by many nearby instruments. The resulting sound contains higher pitch than in the previous examples when it was speeded up only 50 times.
