In 1919 they'd made 400,000 cars; they also launched an enclosed four -door sedan during the year. In 1920 Horace fell ill with pneumonia. John rushed to his bedside where he sat idle for days. John caught pneumonia almost immediately and died ten days later. Horace died later that year. Ironically, this was the first time Dodge Brothers jumped up to become America's second best-selling car company. The brothers' wives inherited all of the company worth $60 million. They hired Frederick J. Haynes to run the company who had been groomed by the Dodge Brothers. DODGE FURTHER GROWTH I 1921-1929 In 1921, Dodge Brothers marketed Graham Brother's trucks through its dealerships and in turn every Graham vehicle utilized a Dodge engine. The resulting sales increases prompted Dodge to buy the Graham Brothers firm. In 1925, A New York investment banking firm paid the brothers' widows $146 million for the Dodge Brothers firm. Within three years, the bankers initiated negotiations with Walter Chrysler to buy Dodge for $170 million. 1930-1945 Through the 1930s, Dodge continued to expand its passenger car line, adding contemporary options like radios and straight-eight engines. A four-door sedan built in 1935 was the brand's three-millionth car. In 1935, Dodge Brothers Corporation was absorbed by the Chrysler Corporation, and no longer a wholly owned company. During World War II, Dodge made war materials. Among Dodge's contributions were more than 500,000 military trucks and over 18,000 aircraft engines. DODGE CHANGING TIMES 1946-196O In the post-war years, Dodge vehicles evolved from earlier designs and maintained a tall, boxy appearance. Pre-war Dodge model designations like Custom and Deluxe were replaced with more colourful names like Meadowbrook, Coronet and Wayfarer. A restyling came in 1955, with more high-powered, high-style cars; Dodge began to establish its reputation as Chrysler's performance brand. Beginning with the 1957 models, Dodges became even lower and longer, giving emphasis to their dramatic tailfins, an iconic Chrysler design feature of the era. 1961-1981 Dodge entered the small-car market for the first time in 1961 with the Lancer, a uniquely styled car that was almost two feet shorter and 700 pounds lighter than a full-size Dodge. In 1966 the first Dodge Charger was produced. Dramatically restyled two years later, the 1968 Charger sold three times as well as its 1966 predecessor and became one of the company's most memorable and successful vehicles. During the mid-1960s, Dodge expanded its reputation as a performance brand with high-powered products for both racing and street applications, including a Ramcharger-equipped rail dragster which set a new national speed record of 190.26 mph. Dodge adapted during the 'muscle car' era of the late '60s and early 1970s by placing large V-8 engines in intermediate-size cars with optional levels of accessorizing. The effects of the 1973 oil crisis, made Dodge focus on fuel-efficient cars such as the subcompact Omni, one of the first American-made cars with front-wheel drive.
