Anything that takes your hands off the wheel, eyes off the road or your mind off driving. Texting, emailing and surfing the web. CAUTION: DISTRACTED DRIVERS AHEAD 1 in 5 young drivers think texting makes no difference Worse, touch screens make mistakes when texting, requiring even more attention. TEXTING EMAILING Texting takes your eyes off the road for 4.6 seconds. This is the equivalent of driving the length of a football 41% field blind. EMAIL WHILE DRIVING 41% of all teens admit to emailing while driving and 9 out of 10 teens expect an email reply within five minutes or less which pressures them to respond while driving. 5 min CRASH 23X MORE LIKELY More than half of teen drivers admit to texting while driving. Texting makes a crash 23 times more likely to occur. SURFING THE WEB 24% OF TEENS ADMIT SURFING THE WEB WHILE DRIVING Young drivers are more likely to reach for their cell phone. In 2013, 24% of teenagers admitted to surfing the web and checking social media while driving. DISTRACTED DRIVING LAWS 41 STATES HAVE ANTI-TEXTING LAWS 41 states have anti-texting laws and yet only 10 states have banned hand-held cell phone use in the car. Cell phone records can be subpoenaed to prove distracted driving as the cause of an accident. Car accidents are among the leading causes of death but distracted driving accidents are preventable.
