Diabetes - Education and Prevention Diabetes in the UK 2.9 million people in the UK have been diagnosed with diabetes. This is a worrying increase from 1.4 million in 1996! By 2025, it is estimated that 5 million people will have diabetes in the UK. This equates to people being diagnosed with diabetes at a rate of: 400+ 17+ 3+ every day every hour every 10 minutes 10% 90% of those have Type i Diabetes of those have Type 2 Diabetes The cost of diabetes £10 billion is the estimated cost of diabetes to the NHS every year. This is 10% of the entire NHS annual budget! One in ten people admitted to hospital has diabetes. This costs the NHS: £192 million £l £286 million every week every hour every second Medical errors A total of 37% of Diabetes Inpatient Audit experienced at least one medication error, 26% at least one prescription error and 20% at least one medication management error. Between January 2005 and July 2009 there were three deaths and 17 incidents reported where intravenous syringes were used to measure and administer insulin. The Safe Use of Insulin Syringes, Pen Devices, Pumps and Sharps Provides learners with the knowledge of how to use insulin syringes, pen devices, pumps and sharps and how to dispose of them safely.
