For example, the character of John Munch originated on Homicide: Life on the Street and later became a regular character on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. The two series are therefore connected and take place within the same universe. The same goes for any other series that any character native to these two shows make crossover appearances on or might get spun off to. And just to be clear, a spin-off is where a new series is created for one or more characters from a previously existing series, such as Frasier in relation to Cheers. What I call "shared reality" in the chart is the weakest form of crossover that still holds water, such as Boston Legal characters discussing Melville's, the restaurant above the bar from Cheers. Both series are set in Boston, it is likely that the characters would eat at that establishment, so l'm buying it. Others may very well be interesting, but to very little or no degree are they plausible, such as The X-Files crossing over with COPS. See, a crossover has to work both ways to be a true crossover, i.e., reality shows and animated series do not make the cut. Also, I am aware of what is commonly referred to as the Tommyverse, a similar concept linking some 280 television series together through different types of crossovers and references to shared realities. However, I feel that a lot of the connections in the Tommyverse are a little too weak to be considered legitimate. Two prominent examples are Oceanic Airlines and Morley Cigarettes-two brands that are used pretty much whenever a generic airline or cigarette brand is needed. Doesn't mean there's a connection to Lost or The X-Files. So I based this chart on the information available at poobala.com, and it should be viewed as a graphic visualization of just that. It does not claim to be some sort of definitive chart over what the internal reality of all the shows on television "is". Keep in mind; it's only television. This chart was made in the summer of 2012 and should thusly only be expected contain crossovers made up until that point. Future crossovers may alter the chart drastically, adding a multitude of series to it. In the case of new crossovers being made, or me finding out about legitimate crossovers I was not aware of, I might produce a new edition adding those series as well as rectifying any errors I sincerely hope I have not made in this one. As I mentioned earlier, this is based on research made by Thom Holbrook, available on his website, poobala.com, which has more information on all of the crossovers listed here, and also identifies and lists in great detail no less than thirty-eight other universes.
