AO AT0 Crime Rates Fall In The USA Are you safer today? Y Crime rates in the United States have been cut nearly in half during the past 20 years, including both violent and property crimes. Where are you safest and why is crime falling? The following graphics tell the story of America's decline in crime. Violent crime includes murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. WHERE AND HOW DO ROBBERIES OCCUR? In 2012, the FBI estimate that 292,074 robberies occurred defined as a suspect using force or threat of violence to take something of value from a victim. On average, $1,167 of property was stolen per reported robbery. Based on the number of crimes per 100,000 people, higher rates of both property crime and violent crime occur in the South, a trend that's been consistent during the past decade. The UCR presents the total number of violent and property crimes correlated with population size, though it cautions that several other factors affect crime rates: population density, economic conditions, and educational achievement levels, to name a few. WHERE DO PEOPLE FEEL THE SAFEST? Among people who live in the 50 largest metropolitan areas, on average 71 percent say they feel safe when they walk alone at night.
