The Cost of Neglect

THE COST OF NEGLECT How Venezuela's Education System SHOULD Have Been Reformed When it comes to student achievement, the education systems of Latin America fall far behind the rest of the world. One of the worst offenders is Venezuela. There is currently a deficit of nearly 5,000 schools across the country, many schools are falling apart and lacking in staff, the areas are unsafe and many students do not want to risk the danger of walking to school. Without serious changes to the infrastructure of their education system, Venezuela risks missing out on educating their next generation. This is where the 82 billion dollars that President Chávez gifted to other countries, rather than investing in his own country, comes in. If the education budget in Venezuela had included this money, an astronomical amount of good could have been done. The totals shown here are estimates, but include all thevvv items necessary to support the 11,000,000 children eligible to attend school in Venezuela. Each new schools, the maintenance of current schools, teaching salaries, textbooks and supplies, food for students, and any extracurricular activities the students participate in. The average annual teaching salary is vastly different between nations. While Venezuelan educators do not have the lowest salaries in the region, there is great room for improvement. Teaching wages are dependent on the size of the country, the number of eligible students, and the percentage of the annual budget set aside for education. year a certain percentage of a nation's GDP is set aside for the building of ESTIMATED RESOURCES THAT COULD HAVE BEEN PROVIDED WITH AN 82 BILLION DOLLAR INCREASE IN EDUCATION FUNDS = 1,000 schools = 1,000 teachers = 1,000 officers 100,000 textbooks = 100,000 uniforms BUILD NEW SCHOOLS HIRE EDUCATORS PPI HIRE SECURITY GUARDS PURCHASE TEXTBOOKS PURCHASE UNIFORMS 22,000 new schools that include 2 floors of classrooms and halls, a kitchen, administrative offices, a comprehensive room, a library, a computer room, and multiple bathrooms each. 3 new textbooks for each student for a total of 33,000,000 textbooks for 8 years. The total cost of these textbooks would be $1,760,000,000. 550,000 new teachers with their salaries paid for 12 years, totaling $66,000,000,000. 1 new uniform for each student for a total of 11,000,000 uniforms.
