Digital Publishing: Short History In 1455 Gutenberg introduced printing press. The world changed. And now it's high time for digital publishing to change it again. Digital publishing in its current state didn't appear yesterday, it has more than a 40-year history. How Did It Start? Digital publishing was born on July 4, 1971 when Project Ğutenberg started. It was founded by Michael Hart who made a digital copy of the Declaration of Independence. 1970s Project Gutenberg The first CD-ROM became commercially available in 1982. And many magazine and newspaper publishers began to experimenting with new ways of editions distribution. 1980s CD Era 1990 was called the "International Year of Literature". And this year opened an era of ebooks. Books in txt, mobi, doc formats took the market. 1990s EBOOK First Ebooks People started to understand the advantages of texts in digital formats. 2000s: ePaper Revolution in epublishing The digital publishing was developing at railway speed. In 2003, e paper technology was introduced to the mass market. eReaders revolutionized the process of book reading. It was a totally new experience: to have a whole bookstore in the pocket, the bookstore users might take anywhere. And it is a real milestone in digital publishing development. Mobile technologies are the next step in digital publishing evolution.
