THE Coffee in Indonesia began with its colonial history, and has played an HISTORY important part in the growth of the country. 1696 FIRST COFFEE The Dutch governor in Malabar (India) sent a Yemeni or Arabica coffee (Coffee arabica) seedling to the Dutch governor of Batavia (now Jakarta). The first seedlings failed due to flooding in Batavia. The second shipment later came in 1699 1711 FIRST EXPORT The first exports were sent from Java to Europe by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). 1725 WIDELY CULTIVATED Indonesia was the first place, outside of Arabia and Ethiopia, where coffee was wid ely cultivated. VOC monopolized coffee trading. 1800 MONEY MAKER Coffee shipped from Batavia sold for 3 Guilders / kg in Amsterdam. Incomes in Holland in the 18th century were between 200 to 400 Guilders, this was equivalent of several 100 dollars / kg today. Late 18th Century PRICE DROP The price had dropped to 0.6 Guilders per kilogram and coffee drinking spread from the elite to the general population. 1875 EXPAND VoC expanded Arabica coffee growing areas in Sumatra, Bali, Sulawesi and Timor 1900 NEW VARIETY In 1900 Robusta coffee (C. canephor var. robusta) was introduced to East Java. 20 years later In Gayo highland (Aceh) coffee was first grown near Lake Laut Tawar. 1978 FIRST SACHET First instant coffee sahcet was launched by Kopi Kapal Api, at that time coffee powder was sold in 50kg/tin. They became the first coffee brand that advertised on TV too this year. 1991-now FRANCHISE Exelso first launched in 1991, but the hype just started when Starbucks came to country in 2001, followed by J.CO and Coffee Toffee in 2005, and The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in 2008 2007 BARISTA COMPETITION Indonesian Barista Competition started, organized by Specialty Coffee Association of Indonesia. The champion will represent Indonesia for Asia level and next for the World Barista Championship 2010 FIRST AUCTION Indonesia's first coffee auction take place on Bali, 10 October 2010, organized by Specialty Coffee Association of Indonesia.
