Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD; sometimes referred to as chronic bronchitis or emphysema) is a chronic respiratory disease characterised by an abnormal inflammatory response of the lungs to harmful gases, resulting in airway obstruction that is not fully reversible. This infographic was developed by the pharmaceutical company Almirall, to visualise the changing demographics of COPD across Europe, which include increasing numbers of women and younger sufferers. COPD is caused by smoking tobacco, occupational dust, pollution or genetics. Due to its high prevalence the disease has a significant impact on health economics and delivery of care within healthcare systems.
