Spotlight on greater Christchurch 2013 O CENSUS On 4 September 2010, Canterbury residents Earthquakes of magnitude 6 and above in greater Christchurch Magnitude woke to a magnitude 7.1 earthquake centred near Darfield, 40km west of Christchurch city. This was the first in a series of quakes that shook the region over the following months and years. 2006 • Census 2013 Census 4 September 2010 Magnitude 7.1 22 February 2011 Magnitude 6.3 The most destructive quake, on 22 February 2011, was 6.3 in magnitude and centred in the Port Hills area.
