Cataract Treatment When You Have Keratoconus

E TP. TOZ SPED CATARACT TREATMENT WHEN YOU HAVE KERATOCONUS WHAT IS KERATOCONUS? • Keratoconus is a vision disorder that happens when the typically round cornea (the front part of the eye) becomes thin and irregular (cone) shaped. This irregular shape prevents the light entering the eye from being focused properly on the retina and causes alteration of vision. • In the past there was only one main treat- ment for Keratoconus other than eye glasses, or contact lenses which was a painful and invasive corneal transplant. Over the past decade or more technology has improved the treatments for Keratoconus. TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR KERATOCONUS PATIENTS MONOFOCAL AND TORIC IOL (Astigmatism correcting lenses) • What is an IOL? Artificial intraocular lenses, or 1OLs, substitute the eye's natural lens that is detached during cataract surgery. • Toric IOL- For cataract patients with astigmatism, Toric IOLS can offer the potential for improved uncorrected visual perception than they have ever had before by correction astigmatism. ADVANTAGES OF TORIC IOL Toric IOL's provide a better sharper range of vision with fewer double images. Enhanced individualization and customization of lenses Cataract • Toric IOLS correct for the astigmatism at the same time as they replace a natural lens that has become clouded by a cataract. ADVANTAGES OF MONOFOCAL IOL • Costs partially covered by Medicare and private insurance. Better vision for night driving or seeing in low light after removal of cataract and insertion of this new clear lens. • Monofocal IOL- With monofocal lenses, vision is typically in focus at only one distance: near, intermediate or far. Alternatively, you can choose to have an IOL implanted in one eye to increase your distance vision and one implanted in the other eye to expand your near vision. This method is referred to as monovision. OTHER TREATMENT OPTIONS Holcomb C3-R® This revolutionary treatment developed by Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler in 2003 is used to stablize the vision of those suffering with Keratoconus. This treatment involves applying a vitamin rich solution and the exposing the eyes to a special UV light that activates the solution. This vitamin solution helps to strengthen the cornea and stop the progressive vision changes associated with Keratoconus. + ADVANTAGES OF HOLCOMB C3-R° • This treatment can potentially reverse some of the damage done to the cornea over time. • It is both effective and requires little recovery time.
