Budget European City Breaks - Discover Prague

EUROPE'S TOP BUDGET HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS DISCOVER PRAGUE Prague is not really a budget destination anymore, but it still can be if you choose your activities wisely. The beer is still very cheap, and there are many things to see and do for free in this beautiful city, with the examples of architecture throughout history being among the main free attractions. POLAND Prague CZECH REPUBLIC If you stay away from the tourist traps, you can eat and drink for a very reasonable price, and there are many ways to appreciate the city without paying top dollar. The following guide should help. PRAHA (PRAGUE) DISTRICTS The city of Prague is divided into 10 main districts (left), with the Vltava River splitting the city in two. The main tourist area is the Old Town in Prague 1. Once you have seen the main sights in this area, move on to the surrounding areas as they are much more budget friendly. 10 THE MAIN (MUST SEE) SIGHTS PRAGUE PRAGUE CASTLE 00000 00000 9th Century castle consisting of St Vitus Cathedral, a basilica, palaces and other buildings, plus a garden. Entry into most areas within the Castle is 350 CŻK (-ĞB£ 9 / ~US$ 14). Some exhibitions are extra. However, if you are on a budget, you won't be disappointed with the parts of the castle that you can see for free (which includes the changing of the guards). Or you can select the parts you want to see the most, and only pay for them. OLD TOWN SQUARE In the heart of the Old Town is the main square. A huge market descends on the square at Christmas, and other smaller markets take place here throughout the year. Most of this beautiful square can be enjoyed for free, however avoid the restaurants, cafes and bars here if you are on a budget as you will pay a premium price. ASTRONOMICAL CLOCK The medieval Prague orloj, or astronomical clock, is another attraction that you can see for free, and is located on the Old Town City Hall. The display occurs every hour during the day. THE CHARLES BRIDGE The most famous bridge. Features statues, buskers, great views and a connection over the river VItava between the two sides of Praque 1; the Old Town and the Castle. PRAGUE 2 DANCING HOUSE The marvellous destructive style of architecture used in this 90s building can be admired from the outside for free. There is a restaurant at the top of the building offering spectacular views, but you will pay premium prices for international food. VYŠEHRAD Prague's other castle is a 10th century spectacle featuring the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral (left), an open air theatre, a cemetery where you can view the graves of Alphonse Mucha and other Czech artistic greats, plus a romanesque basilica and more. There is an admission fee for some areas, including The Old Burgrave's Residence, Vysehrad Gallery, The Brick Gate and Casemate and The Gothic Celler, but you won't have to pay much more than £2 / $3 for entry to any of these areas. OTHER ACTIVITIES THE JOHN LENNON WALL A graffiti wall feauring Beatles lyrics and other John Lennon inspired graffiti. The wall is constantly changing as new graffiti is added, but continues to represent ideals such as peace and love. LASKAaar WAIS OVER! 5 VRTBOVSKÁ ZAHRADA (GARDEN) These stunning baroque gardens can be accessed through the Vrtba Palace on the Mala Strata. Entry into the gardens is just 62 CZK (£1.60 / US$2.50). BEER MUSEUM Prague is the home of Pilsner beer, but that is not the only Czech beer with a great reputation. Beer Museum is not actually a museum, but bars in districts 1 and 2 that offer a wide range of different Czech beers for you to sample; plus a great food menu with traditional Czech food. NATIONAL THEATRE If your budget will allow, then a performance at Prague's national theatre (Národní divadlo) is a breath-taking experience. However, if not, then it is still worth doing the one hour guided tour of the historic buildings for just CZK 120 (£3.11 / US$4.85). Budget friendly options can be found in Prague 5 and other outlying districts that are still close to the main sights.
