A Brief Timeline of TV Advertising

ABRIEF TIMELINE OF TVADVERTISING HTTP://WWW.GUERILLASCOPE.CO.UK The first advert is broadcast in America The first television advertisement was broadcast in the United States on July 1, 1941 and watchmaker Bulova paid $9 for the privilege to have their product advertised on WNBT between a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. 1941 ITV broadcasts the first advert in UK 1955 Television advertising begins in Britain on 22nd September 1955 and was for Gibbs SR toothpaste. The BBC managed to steal the newspaper headlines by killing off Grace Archer in 'The Archers'. The 1950s aiso saw significant changes to sponsorship, as companies were allowed to sponsor whole programs for the first time 1960S The modern advert comes into being In the USA, an executive at NBC came up with a new form of advert, which would only be 1-2 minutes long and would be screened during television breaks. These became the commercials and adverts that we know today. 1970S The message changes With the rise of colour television, adverts were forced to become more creative and adventurous. Cigarettes were also banned on television in this era. Furthermore, the emphasis of adverts moved away from telling a consumer why they should buy a product, and more towards encouraging people to buy into the lifestyle offered by the product. 1980S Advertising explosion Advertising becomes ever more liberalised in the 1980s. In the UK, credit cards begin to arrive, and the "Tell Sid" ad campaign invites people to invest in the newly privatised British Gas. Children's adverts become the norm for the first time, as Saturday morning cartoons see commercials for G.I. Joe and My Little Pony. A report is published recommending that the BBC be allowed to advertise in place of the licence fee, but this recommendation is rejected. 1990S&2000S The rise of the Internet and On- Demand television Advertising becomes more interactive and expands to include charities and even the Church of England advertising their cause. Sky Television and the formation of the Premiership are important developments in the world of Advertising Revenue. The rise of on-demand television has meant that advertising may no longer be as lucrative on television, as viewers can now flip past adverts they don't want to see. The Internet has also arrived as a completely new medium for advertising space, and makes advertising a much bigger market.
