Break it Down

BREAK IT DOWN Lots of people are not using their Organic bin. We want to find out why and help you understand the food waste cycle. FOOD WASTE Your kitchen food waste you can prevent food waste going to landfill. When food waste is sent to landfill, it rots and releases the harmful greenhouse gas methane into the atmosphere and causes leachate which pollutes our rivers and soils. ORGANIC BIN When used regularly you'll notice how little waste goes into the residual bin. It makes sense for your pocket and the environment. WASTE COLLECTION It's hard to know where your food waste goes once your organic bin is emptied into the truck. Rest assured it's being delivered to one of the many industrial composters across the country. Food waste recycling is the most localised of all recycling methods unlike our plastics, paper and glass recycling that gets exported for reprocessing. INDUSTRIAL COMPOSTING Your waste collector delivers the organic waste to the industrial composter. These are large enclosed units where food waste breaks down naturally and reaches temperatures of up to 70 degrees killing all bacteria. After 12 weeks the compost is mature and ready for sale. This is one of the simplest recycling processes using very little energy and resources. CROP GROWTH This nourishing compost is sold to local farmers, landscape architects, horticulturists and amateur gardeners. The compost derived from food waste is much more nutritious than the compost you buy in a garden centre. Best of all it's locally made and you had a part in making it. MARKET PLACE The farmers then use this compost to grow crops which are sold back into the supermarkets, thereby closing the food loop. Wouldn't it be great to know which products in the supermarket were grown using compost made up of your nutritious food waste? FOOD WASTE And so the food waste cycle starts again. As you know up to a third of the food you buy in the supermarket could end up in the bin. Help keep this food in the loop by using Obeo along with your organic bin service.
