Boeing (BA) Relative Performance

Relative Performance Boeing is up 205% over the last five years compared to the ITA, Aerospace & Defense industry ETF, which is up 158%. Over the same period the S&P 500 is up a little over 100%. Air travel and therefore aircraft manufacturing is dependent on economic growth that leads to consumer and government spending and investment. The industry is reflective of the rest of the market. It is up 85% compared to the S&P 500 which is up by 26%. Boeing has been performing strongly on the back of rising passenger traffic from Middle East and Asia Pacific leading to greater orders from the airlines as they expand their fleet. Boeing has a 7 year record order backlog for 737 aircraft and 3.5 year backlog for wide body aircraft. It also announced orders worth $ 66 billion from Paris Air Show and an additional $100 billion from the Dubai Air Show Lockheed Martin (LMT) which is Boeing's closest competitor in the Defense segment has risen by almost 50% and ITA is up 47.5%. Boeing has outperformed the rest of the market primarily due to higher revenues and new orders in Boeing's commercial business.
