SURFACES BOCCE ANYWHERE While bocce is rich in tradition and rules, today's version can be enjoyed casually by anyone almost anywhere - not just on a bocce ball court. COURT •(TURF) SAND (SHELL) GRASS OBJECT OF THE GAME The object is to throw your bocce balls closer to the "pallino" or "jack" than your opponent. The first team to reach 12 points wins the game (must win by 2). Game length varies by region: (generally up to 12-21 points). A match typically consists of 3 games. 12-21 a COIN TOSS PALLINO OR JACK A coin toss will determine who VS places the jack to start off the first frame. RULES Bocce ball can be played with 2 to 8 players. OR 8 PLAYERS OR - 2 PLAYERS – 4 PLAYERS POSITION THE PALLINO ON COURT The goal is to cross the center line and land at least 12 inches from the side and back boards. Two attempts are given to land inbounds then the opposing team can place the pallino in play to start the frame. 4 FT 10 FT CENTER LINE 10 FT 4 FT 2 WAYS TO PLAY OPEN BOCCE TOURNAMENT STYLE • Feel free to toss the pallino any playable distance & direction to begin each frame. • Initial player who placed the pallino throws first. • Initial player who placed the pallino throws their ball first. • Each succeding by the team furthest from the pallino. • Play alternates until all 8 balls are thrown. • Inside team only throws if opponents have thrown all 4 balls. • Calculate frame score. • Calculate frame score. A "BACI" OR "KISS" Rewards 2 points if the jack and ball remain touching at the end of the frame. BOUNCE TOSS "BACI" OR "KISS" ROL TIPS Your bocce throw can be a toss, roll, or bounce, and its encouraged to "spock" an opponent's ball away from the pallino. Make defensive moves by bumping the jack to a new position away from your opponent's ball or play offense and surround it with your team's balls. SPOCKING When attempting to "spock" an opponents ball you can throw from the hitting line, after declaring that as your intention. %23 BLOCKING Blocking is the tactic of setting up a perimeter of your own color around the jack to prevent your opponent from gaining the inside position. BANKING Much like pool, when playing in a court with side rails, you can bank off the side rails to position your ball around an opponent's blocks. This strategy won't be available in most backyard play. BUMPING Manipulation of the jack with your throw is known as bumping. One come-back strategy is to knock the jack into a group of your own color as one of your final throws. SCORING Once all 8 balls have been thrown at the pallino, only one team scores after points have been calculated (1 to 4 points per frame). If a bocce ball is touching the pallino, it's often known as a "baci" or "kiss" and can be rewarded 2 points if they remain touching at the end of the frame.
