WOODSON HISTORIAN, SCHOLAR, EDUCATIONALIST (1875-1950) Son of former slaves, and 2nd black person to graduate from Harvard University When he prompts the fraternity Omega Psi Phi to create "Negro History & Literature Week:" 1920 HEY FRED, YOUR BIRTHDAY IS ON Woodson eventually proceeds to build a week-long "Negro History Week" event around traditional days in February that already historically commemorated the African-American past: VALENTINE'S DAY. PEOPLE WASHINGTON 1940s: West Virginia Influenced by Woodson, PARTICIPATING 1926: Washington, DC Woodson promotes the first "Negro History Week" African-Americans begin and from "Negro History" to "Black History" and it's officially 1976: Nationwide The ASALH influences the official shift from a week to a month to celebrate February as "Negro History Month" recognized by the US Government Late 1960s: Nationwide Young collegiate African-Americans become increasingly aware of their heritage and the expansion of "Negro History Week" to "Black History Month" spreads rapidly The Civil Rights Movement 1950s-1980s The NAACP FOR THE Dr. Martin Luther king Jr., 1929-1968 THIS GUY (Minister & Social Activist) NAACP FOUNDED 1909 Was the foremost leader of the movement and awarded the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize for his work.
