Bilingualism Across the U.S.

BILINGUALISM ACROSS THE U.S While a majority of the country's population spoke English in 2007, data reveals that the population that speaks a language other than English has been increasing for the past 30 years. While some may not like the sound of that, it does present the opportunity for those children to grow up as bilinguals. For decades bilingualism has had a negative connotation; however, scientists have begun to prove that there are many advan- tages to being bilingual -- namely, it makes you smarter. Learn more. LANGUAGES IN THE HOME Languages spoken by the American population (5 years and older): Speak only English at home Speak a language other than English at home Here's a breakdown of the languages, other than English, that are spoken at Spanish or Spanish Creole home. Other Indo-European languages Asian and Pacific Island languages Other languages Those who speak a language other than English at home were asked how well they spoke English: Very well 55.9% Well 19.8% Not Well 16.3% Don't speak 8.1% Most commonly spoken languages at home (Other than English, number of speakers 2007): Vietnamese French Tagalog Chinese Spanish or Spanish Creole 350 Spanish 300 250 Italian 200 150 100 Chinese 25 Yiddish 20 Korean 15 Viet- 10 namese Russian 1980 1990 2000 2007 x 100.000 While most children can learn more than one language easily, it's never too late to become bilingual.
