Many may think of hiking as an adventure through canyons and mountains for weeks at a time, which may deter people from partaking in one of the best and simplest form of outdoor activities. It is great for losing weight, building muscle and increasing your endurance and stamina. Determine your ability If you are new to hiking, you may want to start with gentle hikes through your local park or forest. This will allow you to build up your strength and endurance to slowly pick up your pace and move on to new places. Hiking through the wilderness for hours can be a daunting task for a beginner. There are many things you need to learn to keep you safe and prevent you from getting lost. Where are you planning to go Before you set off on your hike, you need to decide where you are going. This will allow you to determine how long you will be away for and what what you need to pack. If you're going for a trek through your local woods you may be away for a day but if you're planning to hike the lakes or the Scottish mountains, you may need to plan ahead and set aside a few days to accommodate your trip. Let others know If you are planning on hiking, you must let others know you are going, where you are going and the time you plan on returning. If you do find yourself in trouble, you may be alone for a long time before someone comes across your path. They will then be able to report the authorities and tell them you haven't returned. What to wear When hiking, you are exposed to whatever the elements have to throw at you. You need to be prepared and wear the right clothing. You will need a fleece, (sometimes known as a midlayer). This insulates the heat your body exerts and keeps you warm. It should be lightweight, quick drying and able to be worn under a jacket. You will then need a waterproof jacket, sometimes known as a windproof jacket. Your waterproof jacket should be breathable and fully waterproof. You will also need walking boots. These play a vital part in keeping your feet safe when you are hiking over rocks and stones. Chose a pair that are comfortable, sturdy, waterproof and have a high ankle cuff. What to take You should tailor your equipment for how long you decide to hike for.
