According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, half of America's jobless have been out of work for six months or more: That's 6.6 million people, all scrambling for the same scant few positions. Of those jobless, 23% -- some 3.4 million, outnumbering the entire population of Iowa -- have been jobless for at least a year. Those are tough odds. How can you beat them? O House Odds 3 UGLY NUMBERS THAT ARE TOUGH FOR MEN TO BEAT 1 2010 2011 The Congressional Budget Office projects that the U.S. unemployment rate will remain above 9% through 2011 and will not decline to 5% - the so-called "natural" jobless rate - until 2016. 2016 2 Between 2000 and 2009, men's participation in the U.S. labor force declined by 4.1%. During the same time span, women's partici- pation in the U.S. labor force declined by only 1.5%. 2000 2009 -1 Women: -1.5% -2 A Men: -4.1% -5 Among those who have been unemployed for at least 6 months: 38% report having lost self-respect 24% say they have sought professional help for depression or other emotional issues while out of work.
