BATTLE OF THE LONG-DISTANCE RACES With its 26.2 miles and roots in Greek lore, the marathon may have all the glory among long-distance races. But when it comes to popularity among runners in the US, there's no question: the half marathon wins the race. Based on data from Running USA for the 2012 calendar year, here is how marathons and half marathons compare. FINISHERS 13.1 Half marathon Marathon 26.2 mi 487,000 in 2012*- a 6% decrease from the record 1.85 million 518,000 in 2011 in 2012- a 14.9% increase from 2011 *The number was impacted by the cancelation of the New York City Marathon, which had more than 47,000 finishers in 2011. o In the same 1,136 U.S. half-marathons • Net of New York City Marathon: 471,000 finishers in 2011; would have recognized a growth of 3% for 2011 vs. 2012, there was a 5.1% finisher increase (1,522,637 vs. 1,599,838) O Since 2003, the half-marathon has been the fastest growing road race distance in the US, and for seven consecutive years • There was a 1.6% increase in finishers from the same 388 U.S. marathons for 2011 and 2012 (464,122 vs. 471,595) (2006-12), the number of 13.1 mile finishers has grown by 10% or more each year.
