ASIAN DEVELOPMENT QUTLOOK 2012. REGIONAL OUTLOOK Developing Asia will largely maintain its growth momentum in the next couple of years despite weak global demand. RISING INEQUALITY IN ASIA Developing Asia has made great strides in raising living standards and reducing poverty, but swelling income disparities threaten to undermine that success. 100% Gini coefficient = 240 MILLION PEOPLE WOULD NO LONGER BE POOR IF INEQUALITY HAD NOT RISEN OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS A В 0% cumulative % of households 100% The Gini coefficient is the most commonly used measure of inequality. Developing Asia's Gini coefficient increased from 39% to 46% over the last 20 years CHILDREN MOST LIKELY TO BE OUT OF SCHOOL PRIMARY/SECONDARY TERTIARY rich rich рoor poor Children from households in the poorest income quintile were 3-5 times more likely to be out of primary and secondary school as those from the ridchest quintile in some countries. The situation was even more serious for tertiary education where poorer children are 10-20 times more likely not to attend than the richest children. INFANT MORTALITY RATES rich rich рor рoor Infant mortality rates among the poorest households are 2-3 times greater than among the richest. In the worst cases, the chance of a poor infant dying at birth is more than 10 times higher than those of an infant born to a rich family.
