It's not just just CO2 that gets released when oil or burned. Petroleum releases many other chemicals and heavy metals from car exhaust. Today, motor vehicles are responsible for nearly one half of smog-forming volatile organic compounds (VOCs), more than half of the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, and about half of the toxic air pollutant emissions in the United States.
The California Air Resources Board recently tripled the estimate of premature deaths in California from particle pollution to 18,000 annually. Air pollution includes mainly particles and ozone, but also carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide, as well as hundreds of toxic substances. Coal-fired power plants are among the largest contributors to particulate pollution, followed by diesel and cars.
