Animal Communication Facts

Animal Communication Facts Many pet owners feel their animal companions communicate with them, perceiving certain sounds as specific gestures or requests; whereas in reality very little is actually known about the animal tongue. A vast amount of research has been undertaken over the years to decode languages used by animals, to understand and learn how to communicate with each species. Here we outline five interesting facts about the animal kingdom's lingo, as many of our furry friends communicate in a manner that is far more advanced than we may have ever expected. Prepare to be surprised! The Death Watch Beetle i Beetles Use Morse Code How You doin? It may shock you but even creepy crawlies communicate with one another, none more so than the Death Watch beetles. These insects use a system similar to Morse code to converse with one another. Rather than using the code to send out distress SOS signals, which is the most well-known usage of Morse code the bee- tles when digging their tunnel intentionally bang their head upon the ceiling. This movement aims to attract potential mates, as the sound echoes along the tunnels – no need for flowers or chocolates!. IT'S DARK! Talking Eggs!? It is not an uncommon sight to see an expectant mother speaking to her bump - or even someone else having a conversation with a bump! What would scare you is if the bump spoke back!!! Well, this is a commonplace within the chicken world. Near to hatching baby chicks can be heard pepping in their egg, reassuringly the mother hen will cluck back; and mother and child will have their first conversation. Prarie Dogs Can Judge You Have you ever seen a group of Prarie Dogs all turn their head in synchronisation? Well, this is not the only interesting skill of this species. Recent research has shown that the language they use to communicate with one another may be the most advanced and complex non-human tongue of the animal kingdom that has been observed so far. To warn others within the pack about approaching dangers, an individual Prarie dog could describe not only the size and shape of the predator but also its species. What is even more extraordinary is when spotting a human they could distinguish what clothing they were wearing, and whether they were carrying a gun! This was then communicated to warn other members of the pack. Her bum definitely looks big in that. Next time you see a synchronised head turn, it may be these dogs looking you up and down to report back to the pack! Bees Can Boogie You may have heard of the saying dance as if nobody is watching, well honey bees dance to make others watch. They use a dance move known as the waggle dance to communicate with one another. Cats Only Meow For Humans Are cats' man's best friend? Cat and dog owners can both argue the point for their pet, but the following fact may work in the favour of cat lovers. Meowing is a common noise we associate with cats but did you know this sound is only used solely for us humans? All other sounds and movements that they use as a form of communication such as hissing to show distress and body language to convey their mood are used as signals to communicate with other animals.
