ANDROID: THE STORY SO FAR Trace the story of Android in facts and figures from its humble beginnings to its current dominance in the smartphone market and look forward to future innovations. WHAT IS ANDROID? Android is a complete set of software for mobile devices that is open source and free. It is powered by the Linux kemel. Google and other members of the Open Handset Alliance collaborated on Android's development and release. ESTABLISHED Company founded to develop, said co-founder Andy Rubin ".smarter mobile devices that are more aware of its owner's location and preferences." 2005 GOOGLE ACQUIRES ANDROID Little was known about Android Inc. but this was assumed to be Google's plan to enter the mobile phone market. OPEN HANDSET ALLIANCE 2007 ANNOUNCES ANDROID The Open Handset Alliance - a group of over 80 technology and mobile companies including LH, HTC, Samsung Google and Sony, who have come together to accelerate innovation in mobile - unveil their first product: Android. 2009 ANDROID VERSION 1.0 RELEASED ....*** The first ever Android device was the HTC Dream (GI) which included a range of Google integration services ANDROID REACHES NO.1 SPOT IN SMARTPHONE ARENA 2011 By the end of 2010 Android dominated the market in the US (59%) and Europe (46%). THE EVOLUTION OF ANDROID Android has been updated a number of times since its original release, to fix bugs and add new features.
