Americans discard 58 billion coffee cups per year, enough to fill New York's Central Park 90 feet high
Americans discard 58 billion coffee cups per year. All these cups, if they were all thrown into New York's Central Park, would fill it up 90 feet high. That is about as high as a 10 story building. ... The fact that disposable cups end up in landfill is only a fragment of the whole story. The manufacture of 100 million Starbucks coffee cups would require 4,300 tons of trees.Where does the paper pulp come from? Where in the world are those trees that made that cup? It could very well be the same rainforest forest that displaced one of the last tiger families in Indonesia. Or it could come from plantations in China, Russia or Burma.Forests are regularly logged illegally by militia groups in PNG, Burma, Brazil and Indonesia. Greenpeace recently found that trees from one of the last tiger habitats were found in KFC packaging. All non recycled, non-FSC paper should be regarded with suspicion and avoided where possible.Avoid disposable coffee cups by getting a re-suable keep cup. Keep one at work, one in your car, one in your hand bag and let's quite this bizarre culture of throw-away items.
