According to surveys, the expectation is these insecurities will cause back-to- school shopping for the coming academic year to be flat compared to 2010, This may not bode well as some analysts see back- to-school shopping as a predictor for the winter holiday shopping season, TAKING ATTENDANCE The projected number of students enrolled in the nation's schools this fall, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, is 55.5 million., There will be 19.7 million college and university students enrolled across the nation. Shoppers will spend an avérage of $96 on school supplies for grade-schoolers and $61 for college students DRESSED FOR SUCCESS Back-to-school clothes, including uniforms, but excluding shoes, are the second priority of shoppers, $226 is the average that will be spent dressing kids from K-12 and $127 is the average for those going to college Ray RIGHT FOOT FORWARD New shoes are an important back-to- school purchase, averaging almost $105 for grade- school aged kids and $60 for those going to college. WIRED TO LEARN An average of $190 will be spent on electronic gadgets, including home computers, Laptops, calculators and MP3 players, for those attending grade school, College students average almost $210, PITCHING IN Teenagers will help out mom and dad, spending an average of a little over $30 of their own money on back-to-school items, Pre-teens (6 to 12 years- old) will spend abóut $15 of their own money on school supplies. While spending during the winter holiday Season is almost seven times greater than back-to-school spending, 69 billion compared to 462 billion last year, the track for spending has been similar.
