5 Must-see Places in Denmark

5 Must-See Places in Denmark In the city of Roskilde on the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in eastern Denmark, is a cathedral of the Lutheran Church of Denmark. Kronborg Castle may be most famous as the setting of "Hamlet," where it is known as Elsinore. Built in 1574, Kronborg sits on the small strait of water known as the Sund, which separates Denmark from Sweden. Lonely Planet calls it "Denmark's most imposing castle"; The first Gothic cathedral to be built of brick, it encouraged the spread of the Brick Gothic style throughout Northern Europe. Constructed during the 12th and 13th centuries, the cathedral incorporates both Gothic and Romanesque architectural features in its design. Kronborg is one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe and has been added to UNESCO's World Heritage Sites list (2000). Until the 20th century, it was Zealand's only cathedral. Its twin spires dominate the skyline of the town. The sprawling amusement park known as the Tivoli Gardens, located in the capital city of Copenhagen, is the second-oldest amusement park in the world and the second most visited in Europe. The statue of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen stands as a symbol for the city and country as a whole. Denmark Travel Guide notes that "she is as important for Copenhagen as statue of liberty for New York and pyramids for Egypt" -- expect lines and crowds on a similar scale if you choose to see her too. Tivoli combines vintage charm with modern rides and attractions. The must-see ride at Tivoli is the Rutsjebanen, a still-functional wooden roller coaster dating from 1914. Sculpted and placed in the harbor in 1913, The Little Mermaid is indeed little at only 5 feet 5 inches high. The sculpture was inspired by Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen's tale The runner-up is the Star Flyer, billed as the tallest carousel in the world. Its distinctive tower makes Tivoli a landmark on the Copenhagen skyline. of the same name. The Round Tower, or Rundetarn, is the oldest still-utilized astrological observatory in Europe. For the tourist, the tower, standing more than 100 feet high, offers a panoramic view of Copenhagen, as well as a chance to look through a professional-grade telescope. The journey to the top features a spiral walkway so wide you could drive a horse- drawn carriage through it -- in fact, it was built precisely for this purpose.
