But what else do you know about fitness expert Richard Simmons? Richard Milton Teagle Simmons was born July 12, 1948 in New Orleans, Louisiana. In addition to a disfigured upper leg and Asthma, Simmons was born without a full set of bones in his feet. cough By high school, he weighed 300 pounds despite standing only 5' 6 ½". 3 As a youth, Simmons' weight ballooned to RICHARD 250 pounds. 5 Beginning in childhood, Simmons dabbled in some ridiculously unhealthy weight loss methods: EZ-LAX!! SLIMMONS Simmons started his own gym, the awesomely named Slimmons, 8 in 1974 after searching in vain for a fitness center in Los Angeles that catered to overweight people. Since starting the gym, Šimmons claims to have helped people lose more than 3,000,000 pounds. That's enough food to fill a football stadium. 10 RICHARD 11 SIMMNS Sweatin to the Oldies CENERAL HOSPITAL He has authored several books on the subject of weight loss and fitness, but his most famous creation remains the Sweatin' to the Oldies exercise video series. He appeared as himself for four seasons on the long running soap opera General Hospital. After frequent appearances on 12 the Howard Stern Show in the 90's, Simmons finally stopped appearing after he felt he was insulted one too many times. That shirt makes you look fat. 13 He did reappear on the Stern show in 2006, but ended up running from the studio crying hysterically after more insults. Simmons had a similar falling out with late night talk show host David Letterman after an appearance on the show in 2000. During a skit, Letterman sprayed Simmons in the face with a fire extinguisher, causing the fitness guru to suffer an asthma attack.
